Shu-Ling WangFaculty

Associate Professor of Economics and Dr. Richard W. Lindholm Professor of Public Finance in Business and Economics

Dr. Wang joined Gustavus in 2016, after her two-year visit at The College of Wooster, with teaching interests in Macroeconomics, Money and Banking, International Finance, and Public Finance. Being an active instructor in an interactive and interdisciplinary liberal arts environment, she enjoys developing and experimenting teaching pedagogies to enrich students' learning experiences. She also enjoys mentoring undergraduate research that fosters students to become a critical thinker. At Wooster, Shu-Ling advised several one-year long senior independent studies, and at Gustavus, she offers writing in discipline courses in economics and mentors class projects. In October 2023, her Money and Banking students' paper titled “The Asian Crisis of 1997" won the 3rd place in the category of economic communication of the Minnesota Economics Association (MEA) undergraduate paper contest. In 2025, Shu-Ling served as a faculty panelist at the MAYDAY! Peace Conference under the teach-in model at Gustavus, addressing on peace, human rights, and social justice issues and inspiring participants to act for a more peaceful world.

Dr. Wang's research focuses on Macroeconomics, Monetary Economics, and International Finance. She particularly study fiscal and monetary policy issues, such as fiscal stimulus, debt financing, tax policy, and distributional effects as well as DEI, using a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) framework with representative or heterogeneous agents. Her papers are published in Journal of Macroeconomics, Review of International Economics, and Economic Modelling, and she received the Mansergh Faculty Scientific Research Award at Gustavus in 2022 and 2025. Her recent project studies the debt-financed stimulus effects in a high-debt economy without monetary independence, considering various schemes and speed of debt financing in a two-sector New-Keynesian model. She presents her work at the MEA, CEA, WEAI, and Liberal Arts Macro Conferences.

In addition to her own work, Dr. Wang has actively engaged in professional services. She serves as a paper reviewer for Journal of Macroeconomics, Economic Modelling, Contemporary Economic Policy, Cambridge University Press, and Bulletin of Economic Research. She also participated in the steering and program committee for the Liberal Arts Macro Conference and was one of the Board of Minnesota Economic Association members. In summer 2025, she will serve as a mentor and a panelist for junior women economists at the CeMENT workshop sponsored by the AEA at the Fed of Chicago.

Beyond academia, she is a mom of three children, and she loves architecture, arts, photography, and music. Her favorite architects are Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, and Zaha Hadid. She is also fascinated by the drawings of Georgia O’Keeffe, Edward Hopper, and Claude Monet. She plays piano, violin, and Pi-Pa (a Chinese instrument), and her favorite composers and musicians are Johann S. Bach of the Baroque period.
